Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has called on wealthy nations to meet their commitments to help feed the world's hungry. Speaking at an international Fighting Hunger Conference in the Irish capital, Dublin, Annan said the credit crunch should not be used as an excuse for stopping aid to developing countries.
Annan's address on World Food Day emphasised that 10,000 children in the Third World would die from malnutrition on that day alone. The World Bank predicts that the number of malnourished people will increase by 44 million this year to reach a total of almost 1 billion. Economists have also warned that the world's poor would be the most vulnerable to a global economic downturn.
