Gold in triathlon for Germany's Frodeno ... stock markets fell sharply, ending a two-day rally. Frankfurt's DAX 30, London's FTSE 100 and the Paris CAC 40 closed between six and seven percent down. In New York, the Dow Jones index shed eight percent at closing, the second-biggest drop in its history. The plunge was stoked by a US government report showing that retail sales dropped in September by 1.2 percent. The data raised fears of recession in the world's largest economy.
