NATO defence ministers have reached a compromise deal on calls to do more to combat the trade of illicit drugs in Afghanistan.
That's according to diplomatic sources at NATO talks being held in the Hungarian capital, Budpest. Details of the compromise have not been released. Both the Afghan defence minister and the United States had called on the Western military alliance to authorise its troops to attack drug laboratories, trafficking networks and war lords in the country. Taliban militants fighting against NATO-led troops in Afghanistan are thought to earning tens of millions of euros annually from the sale of heroin. Later in the day, the NATO defence ministers were to meet with their Georgian counterpart to discuss ways of rebuilding the country following its conflict with Russia two months ago.
