Conservationists say that the dwindling number of birds worldwide is a sign that environmental degradation continues and governments are failing to stop it.
Birdlife International, a global conservation society, said in its "State of the World's Birds" report for 2008 that more and more bird species are slipping towards extinction. The head of the Birdlife study said that fewer birds were a telltale sign that they were losing natural habitats and falling victim to rising human populations.
