Afghan defence minister Abdel Rahim Wardak made the troop request at the start of NATO defence minister talks in Budapest. Currently, Afghanistan's police is responsible for the fight against opium drug lords, who are helping fund the Taliban insurgency with their income. The US and Britain are in favour of using NATO troops to eradicate the opium trade. Germany, Italy and Spain resist changing the mission of the International Security Assistance Force that has more than 50,000 soldiers in Afghanistan. 90 percent of the world's opium and heroin comes from Afghanistan.
