The move will effectively hand power to Mr Abdullah's deputy Najib Razak.
Mr Abdullah has been under pressure to quit since leading the ruling National Front coalition to disastrous general election results earlier this year.
Mr Abdullah announced his decision at a meeting with coalition leaders and is due to make a public statement shortly.
