The top American NATO-commander in Afghanistan has asked for 10,000 more troops, saying he needed them as quickly as possible.
General David McKiernan based his request on a rising insurgency that could worsen even more. McKiernan was speaking to reporters at the Pentagon in Washington. He said there has been a significant increase in foreign fighters coming in from neighbouring Pakistan, including Chechens, Uzbeks, Saudis and even Europeans.
