In light of increasing insecurity in the waters off the Horn of Africa, European nations have agreed to launch an anti-piracy operation in the region.
French Defence Minister Herve Morin said at least eight EU countries, including Germany, want to join the mission which could begin as soon as next month. Morin called for co-operation with NATO, which has military ships in the region. More than 60 ships have been seized off the coast of Somalia this year by pirates who demand large ransoms. Currently a Ukrainian-owned cargo ship carrying tanks and weapons is under the control of a group of pirates, making it one of the most spectacular ship seizures.
