German media say the leader of the conservative Christian Social Union party in the state of Bavaria is expected to resign following Sunday's state election, in which the party lost its absolute majority for the first time in almost fifty years.
Party sources say that Erwin Huber is likely to be succeeded by the deputy chairman of the party, Horst Seehofer, who is also Germany's agriculture minister.The CSU, the sister party of Chancellor Angela Merkel's CDU, received only 43 percent of the vote in Sunday's poll, down from 60 percent just five years ago. It will now be forced to form a coalition government.
