The group of European tourists who were kidnapped 10 days ago in the Egyptian desert have been released.
Egyptian television showed a military helicopter with the five Germans, five Italians, a Romanian and eight Egyptian drivers and tour guides landing at a base east of Cairo. There they are supposed to undergo medical examinations. The state news agency MENA quoted Egyptian Defence Minister Hussein Tantawi as saying that half of the kidnappers had been killed in the operation to win their release.
