The UN Security Council has unanimously approved a resolution reaffirming previous sanctions on Iran for refusing to halt its uranium enrichment program.
The vote followed a compromise Friday between the United States and Russia to lead a new council effort to condemn Iran's nuclear program, but imposes none of the new sanctions Washington and its allies want. The text was agreed to on Friday by the five permanent Security Council members and Germany on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Iran, which insists its nuclear program is to generate electricity for peaceful purposes, dismissed the resolution.
