The United States House of Representatives has passed a civilian nuclear pact with India, ending a three decade ban on nuclear trade with the Asian country.
The agreement has to pass the Senate and the Democrats, who control the upper house, hope to bring it to a vote there within days despite the opposition of some in their own party. US congressional blessing is the last hurdle to the pact, which the Bush administration believes will secure a strategic partnership with the world's largest democracy. It will also help India meet its rising energy demands. Critics argue the deal undermines efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and sets a dangerous precedent.
