Police said they had been monitoring the men for months and had decided to arrest them after finding farewell letters in their appartment. In the letters, the men reportedly expressed their intention to die in a holy war. The Berlin newspaper "Tagesspiegel" said on its website that the pair wanted to fly to Pakistan via Amsterdam to join the group Islamic Jihad Union, which is associated with the terror network Al Qaeda.
