Turkmenistan is to adopt a new constitution that allows for the formation of multiple political parties in a country that currently only has one party.
The People's Council in the capital Ashgabat approved a constitution that will double the size of parliament and give it the right to pass constitutional amendments and censure the president. The president is granted formal power to name regional governors and mayors and to appoint the electoral commission. Energy-rich Turkmenistan has made tentative commitments on adopting democratic reforms since current President Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov took power. But exiled opposition activists complain that the changes are insufficient.
