Kgalema Motlanthe has been sworn in as South Aftica's interim president in a ceremony in Cape Town.
The former union leader and deputy head of the ruling ANC is replacing Thabo Mbeki, who was ousted in an internal party power struggle last week. His mandate runs until general elections are held next year. One of Motlanthe's first tasks will be to constitute a new cabinet, after 11 of Mbeki's cabinet ministers and three deputy ministers resigned on Tuesday. Mbeki bowed to an ANC call to resign following a damning court ruling that hinted he was instrumental in a decision to prosecute his longtime rival and ANC leader Jacob Zuma.
