South Africa has a new head of state.
The former trade union leader and deputy head of the ruling ANC was sworn in at a ceremony in Cape Town. He replaces Thabo Mbeki, who was ousted in an internal party power struggle last week. His mandate runs until general elections, which are to be held next year.
