The Chinese space programme is preparing to launch its third manned mission.
The Shenzhou-VII capsule will blast off from the Jiuquan spaceport in northwest China. The flight is expected to last some 70 hours and will include China's first spacewalk. Spacewalking is a crucial next step in China's most immediate extra-terrestrial ambition: to build a permanent space lab. In October 2003, China became only the third nation after the United States and Russia to independently put a man in space.
