German Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung says German troops will step up efforts against drug trade in Afghanistan.
Speaking on German public radio, Deutschlandfunk, Jung said Bundeswehr soldiers would bolster their support for Afghan security forces combatting the narcotics industry, which he said allowed the Taliban to finance attacks against the government and foreign troops. Until now, Germany had been reluctant to fight drug production in Afghanistan, leaving the task to the country's overstretched and undermanned security forces.
