Tens of thousands of left-wing activists and ordinary citizens have prevented a right-wing rally in the German city of Cologne.
The nationalist group Pro-Cologne sought to demonstrate against plans to build one of Europe's largest mosques in the western German city. But police banned the protest, saying public order was at stake following battles with left-wing radicals. Pro-Cologne had invited nationalists from across Europe to Cologne to protest against what it called the "Islamification and immigration invasion" of Germany and Europe.
