South African President Thabo Mbeki has agreed to resign after his ruling ANC announced that it would remove him from office before the end of his term.
A statement from the presidency says that Mbeki will "step down after all constitutional requirements have been met." Parliament is due to meet in the coming days to formalise the resignation procedure. Mbeki's announcement came shortly after the National Executive Committee of the governing ANC called for his resignation amid allegations that he had conspired to push corruption charges against party leader Jacob Zuma. Mbeki was ousted as party leader by Zuma in December 2007. Under the South African constitution the president is appointed by parliament, which is dominated by the ANC.
