South Africa's governing African National Congress (ANC) has called on President Thabo Mbeki to resign.
Speaking at a press conference east of Johannesburg, ANC secretary general, Gwede Mantashe, said the party's National Executive Committee had decided to recall the president before his term of office expires in April 2009. Mantashe stressed that Mbeki would remain president until a new leader was found. The move against Mbeki comes amid allegations that he conspired to push corruption charges against ANC leader Jacob Zuma. Mbeki was ousted as party leader by Zuma in December 2007. Under the South African constitution the president is appointed by parliament, which is dominated by the ANC.
