There have been clashes between demonstrators and counter-protesters at the beginning of a controversial anti-Islam congress in the western German city of Cologne.
The two-day event has been organised by members of the far-right group Pro-Kцln (For Cologne). A spokeswoman for the German interior ministry has criticised the event, calling Pro Kцln an "extremist" group that aimed to undermine good relations between Muslims and non-Muslims. Cologne's Mayor Fritz Schramma has called on the city's inhabitants to show the far-right "the cold shoulder".
