Tributes from all around the world have been sent to revered elder statesman Nelson Mandela on the occasion of his 90th birthday. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso described the former South African president as a "source of inspiration for generations of Africans and world citizens." Mandela was South Africa's first black president from 1994 until 1999.
He was imprisoned for nearly thirty years for advocating armed resistance against the policy of apartheid promoted by the former regime in South Africa.
