18.07.2008 - Czech court annuls acquitting verdict in Unipetrol bribery case

Consequently, the City Court that acquitted Dolezel in January will have to deal with the case again. Dolezel was suspected of demanding a 5-million-crown bribe from Polish lobbyist Jacek Spyra in 2005 in exchange for returning the Seta company, for which Spyra was lobbying, into the negotiations on the Czech Unipetrol privatisation. Commercial TV Nova managed to record several of their meetings with a hidden camera and broadcast the shots. According to the charges, Dolezel committed a fraud since he had no power to meet his promise in his then position Congo ex-leader appears before International Court ...

Dolezel admits having met Spyra, but he says he did not discuss Unipetrol privatisation with him. Dolezel asserts that his demand for "five million in Czech" crowns was nothing but a coded statement, showing the importance level of their negotiations, in particular that then Czech prime minister Stanislav Gross (Social Democrats, CSSD) would attend them. On the contrary, Spyra claims Dolezel demanded a bribe from him. City Court panel chairman Kamil Kydalka said in his justification of the acquitting verdict in January that no part of the video recordings mentioned money and the Seta company. Moreover, the recordings were of a very poor quality and some of their key parts were further processed, Kydalka added. (USD1=14.598 crowns)
