Pavel Bret, director of the Institute for the Documentation and Investigation of the Crimes of Communism (UDV), Rudolf Pavlicek, former member of the national committee in Trtice, west Bohemia, signed the decision to confiscate the property and to move out private farmer Karel Horacek. Horacek was then the largest competition for the emerging agricultural cooperative in the village. Pavlicek, 77, would not comment on his prosecution. "Even if the act had happened, it is already statute-barred," his lawyer Cestmir Kubat told HN. The UDV registers more than 350 complaints against violent collectivisation in the 1950s from across the Czech Republic. With regard for legal continuity, only the crimes that were at variance with then valid laws can be prosecuted. Therefore it is not possible to exactly say how many farmers were affected. A central register was only kept on the resettlement in 1951-53. The documents preserved speak about the confiscation of some 2000 farms.
