German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have settled a protracted row over EU plans to reduce car emissions.
The announcement came at a joint press conference following a summit between the two leaders in the German town of Straubing. Merkel said both countries now supported a reduction of carbon emission to 120 grams per kilometre by 2012, as envisaged in the EU plan. However, transitional provisions are to be a lot more flexible to make it easier for carmakers to adapt to the new requirements.
