The European Union Social Affairs Commissioner has criticised German employers over the low level of wages paid to women. According to Commissioner Vladimir Spidla, women in Germany are paid, on average, 22 percent less than their male counterparts. That's one of the biggest differences in the EU. Only in Estonia, Cyprus and Slovakia is the difference bigger within the EU.
On average, women across the bloc still earn 15 percent less than men in the same jobs. The proportion of women in the workplace is on the rise, but many hold part-time positions.
