Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has assured officials in Tehran that Iraq will not be used as a base for launching attacks against the Islamic state.
That's according to Iranian state media. Al-Maliki was seeking to allay Iranian concerns over a proposed US-Iraq security agreement. Washington is seeking to finalise a deal that would allow the US to maintain military bases in Iraq long term, and possibly use those bases for military operations against other countries. Al-Maliki is also expected to use his visit to address Iran's alleged backing of militant groups in Iraq. He was scheduled to meet with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad later in the day.
