Senegal has confirmed that its president Abdoulaye Wade is brokering talks between the Palestinian Fatah and Hamas factions. The Senegalese government said in a statement that representatives of both groups had been direct and fraternal in the first of seven planned rounds of talks in Dakar.
The statement did not provide further details. President Wade pledged at a March summit of Islamic states held in the West African capital that he would try to mediate between Fatah and Hamas. The two rival Palestinian groups have been at loggerheads since the Islamist Hamas seized power in the Gaza Strip last year.
