Three of five alleged plotters in the September 11, 2001 attacks have demanded to be sentenced to death at a US military hearing, saying they had long sought martyrdom.
Khaled Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11 attacks, and two other defendants, Wallid bin Attash and Ramzi Binalshibh, dismissed the trial as an "inquisition". Mohammed and four other defendants are on trial at the US base for plotting the attacks nearly seven years ago. If convicted they are likely to be sentenced to death by the military tribunal. The detention camp and trial have drawn criticism from human rights activists and governments around the world for violating the suspects' basic civil freedoms.
