visa issues ... Sheikh Mohammed, the presumed mastermind of the September 11 attacks on the United States, has asked for the death sentence. He told a military judge at the start of his trial at Guantanamo Bay that he wanted to die so he could be a martyr. He also threw out his civilian and military defence teams. Mohammed and four other defendants are on trial at the US base for plotting the attacks nearly seven years ago. The five suspects were captured in 2002 and 2003 and held at secret CIA prisons before being transferred to Guantanamo in 2006. The detention camp and the military trial have drawn criticism from human rights activists and governments around the world for violating the suspects' basic civil freedoms.
