World leaders at a United Nations summit in Rome have been struggling to agree on an action plan to tackle the global food crisis.
A summit declaration draft text is encountering rejection from Latin American countries, prompted by Brazil, for language that could harshly criticise biofuels. Brazil has defended its right to grow sugarcane for ethanol. Representatives at the three-day summit have been negotiating over how best to tackle soaring food prices that have sparked riots in numerous countries. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that more than 10 billion euros were needed to invest in food production.
