Just hours after clinching the US Democratic nomination, Barack Obama has pledged to safeguard Israel's security if he is elected president in November.
He told the annual policy conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Council in Washington that suggestions he was unfriendly to Jewish interests were unfounded. Obama added that Jerusalem must remain the "undivided" capital of Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who also attended the conference, described Obama's remarks on Jerusalem in particular as very touching. However, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas rejected the speech. He told reporters in the West Bank town of Ramallah that the Palestinians would not back off from their demand for a state of their own with Arab East Jerusalem as its capital.
