04.05.2008 - Cardinal rejects proposal for cathedral's "nationalisation"

The proposal was submitted by lower house deputy chairwoman Miroslava Nemcova (senior ruling Civic Democrats, ODS).

She wants the cathedral to be owned by the state that would administer it together with the Catholic Church. "Mrs Nemcova's demand is a demand for the second nationalisation of the cathedral. Plans for a national security body for Germany ...

The first was carried out by the communists unlawfully," Prague Archbishop Vlk, Catholic Church primate, said in a TV discussion programme. The Catholic Church is willing to sign a special agreement with the state about the cathedral's administration, but it rejects its "nationalisation," Vlk said. The Prague City Court on Wednesday upheld the lower-level court's verdict, saying that St Vitus's Cathedral at Prague Castle, presidential seat, and the adjacent properties definitively belong to the state. The church opposes the verdict and plans to appeal it. With regard to the pressure being exerted on the Catholic Church over the cathedral, some solution to the long-lasting disputes about the property must be found, Vlk said, but he did not elaborate. Nemcova's proposal enjoys broad support among ODS deputies. The opposition Social Democrats (CSSD) also demand that an agreement on the cathedral be part of the bill on church restitutions. Vlk today defended the agreement between the state and churches on property settlement. If it collapsed, it would be very problematic to find a new solution, he added. The church has done its utmost to reach a compromise, Vlk added.
