Georgia has called on the United Nations to send more observers to the country's separatist region of Abkhazia to monitor an increase in Russian military presence.
Extra Russian troops were deployed to Abkhazia on Thursday, despite objections from Tiblisi, which denounced the move as a "dangerous escalation". Russia already had a force of more than 2,000 stationed there as part of an agreement ending the armed conflict in the early 1990s between the Abkhaz separatists and the Georgian government.
