At least two dozen people have been injured in the storms, and some 350 homes are said to be affected. Some 6,000 homes and businesses lost power.

In February, winter storms deemed to be the worst tornado clusters in US history killed 13 people in Arkansas.

In the north-west of the state, a 15-year-old girl died in her bed when strong winds pushed a tree through the roof of her family's home at Siloam Springs, near the Oklahoma border.

Her 10-year-old brother, who was sleeping in a bunk bed below her, escaped with minor injuries.

Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe told the New York Times newspaper he had declared an emergency and had made the National Guard available to help in affected areas.

As many as 25 tornadoes may have cut through stretches of Oklahoma, Arkansas, eastern Kansas and western Missouri, Greg Carbin, a meteorologist for the national Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, told the Associated Press news agency.
