Across Israel people have held two minutes of silence to remember the six million Jews who were killed in the Nazi Holocaust of the 1930s and 40s.
Sirens wailed in Israeli towns as the nation stopped for Holocaust Day, which is marked each year on May 1. On Wednesday, President Shimon Peres vowed that Israel would never allow the Jewish genocide to be repeated. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial was on the rise around the world.
