In the debate preceding the no confidence vote, initiated by the CSSD, Paroubek said the government harms the country, is illegitimate and incapable of coping with the forthcoming Czech EU presidency. Topolanek, on his part, said his government is "very good, definitely the best of the possible governments that could have emerged from the stalemate after the mid-2006 [elections]." Czech PM convokes meeting to discuss presidential vote method ... topple the government is already the third since the government was established in January 2007. To succeed, the CSSD's proposed motion of no confidence in the government, needs support from at least 101 deputies in the 200-seat Chamber of Deputies. The CSSD, together with the junior opposition Communists (KSCM), have 97 votes.
They probably believe that some coalition deputies might support their initiative, but for the time being this is unlikely to happen. In his speech today, Paroubek tried to persuade some the coalition deputies that they would act correctly if they supported the no confidence motion. He said the centrist junior ruling Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL), who were part of the CSSD-led government in the past years, should consider whether to return to their successful times or keep their "devastating parroting of the ODS." The KDU-CSL should realise that its "internment in the current ultra-liberal coalition" could be fatal to it. "This is a government of fun and gamble. A government that is incompetent to cope with our EU presidency [in the first half of 2009], a government whose foreign political activities are fearful," Paroubek said. Topolanek said his government is not only capable of correcting the mistakes of former CSSD-led governments, but also has its own vision of the country's development. He said the government is lowering public finance deficits, protects patients by introducing changes in the health sector and improves conditions for the judiciary. There are many reasons why this coalition should be preserved and compromises sought, Topolanek said. Apart from the ODS and the KDU-CSL, the government coalition comprises the Green Party (SZ). The government has 100 votes in the lower house.
