The Christian Democrats in the German port city of Hamburg have approved a groundbreaking coalition with the Greens.
Hamburg's CDU party members voted unanimously to approve the deal on Monday evening to seal the first-ever coalition between the two parties at state level in Germany. To strike the deal, the Greens have to allow the River Elbe to be dredged deeper so that the largest container ships can enter Europe's third-largest port. Mayor Ole von Beust is to be reconfirmed in office next week.
