Afghan President Hamid Karzai has escaped what appears to have been an assassination attempt.
He was hussled away together with hundreds of dignitaries when gunfire broke out at a military parade in Kabul. Shortly after the incident Karzai appeared on national TV saying that security forces had thwarted the attack and that several suspects had been arrested. Afghan chief criticises Britain ... at the president. A Taliban spokesman said the operation was carried out by six militants and that three of them were killed. The incident took place during a celebration marking the 16th anniversary of the expulsion of Russian forces from Kabul.
