The European Union's foreign policy coordinator, Javier Solana, is in the Afghan capital, Kabul, at the start of a short diplomatic tour of the region.
Solana's office said the visit was part of preparations for a June aid conference. Solana was expected to hold talks with President Hamid Karzai and other senior Afghan officials. He was also scheduled to meet with officials from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force and United Nations envoy Kai Eide.
