The Olympic torch relay has begun amid tight security in Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur.
Around 1,000 police officers have been deployed to ensure that no anti-Chinese protests can disrupt the relay. Police say they have detained one Chinese monk and two Japanese nationals for attempting to cause disturbances before the event began. Some earlier legs of the Olympic torch relay were disrupted by demonstrators protesting against Chinese rule in Tibet. Steinmeier told the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper that the International Olympic Committee awarded the Games to Beijing in the hope that the media attention would encourage China to open up to the rest of the world.
