Nepal's Maoist party has for the first time explicitly claimed victory in the country's national elections, held nine days ago. The Maoists' leader, Prachanda, made the claim while addressing a rally on the outskirts of the capital, Kathmandu.
He told supporters he would head a new government, with the monarchy abolished. His claim comes as votes are still being counted. It appears Prachanda's party will have the most seats but not an overall majority. Nepal Maoists claim poll victory ...
At least 39 die in bus crash in India ... The Maoists reportedly want to include the two other big parties in a coalition government. However, these have so far been reluctant to enter into a coalition with the former rebels.
