Bayern Munich on Thursday, March 6, scored an emphatic 5-0 victory against 10-man Anderlecht in Belgium, strengthening its position at the top of its group in the UEFA round of 16.
The Bavarians dominated throughout the game, with Hamit Altintop opening scoring after he collected a pass from Luca Toni in the ninth minute.

Bildunterschrift: Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift:   Wiese, center, needed some consolation after giving up two goals In Glasgow on Thursday, Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese gave away two goals to the Rangers just before and after the halftime break.

Bremen's star Diego was out on suspension, while German national team midfielder Torsten Frings was still recovering from a knee injury.

Daniel Cousin's first-half shot from 35 yards slipped through Wiese's hands. Three minutes after the restart, Cousin passed to midfielder Steven Davis who managed to tip the ball into the corner of the net right in front of Wiese.

Rangers coach Walter Smith spoke highly of his team's opponents, calling the win a "massive victory."

"Before the game I had watched quite a lot of Werder Bremen's games on DVD and they always create a tremendous amount of scoring chances," he said. "It's a great credit to our team that they managed to limit Bremen's chances."

In the 87th minute Ranger's substitute Lee McCulloch passed up a chance on goal that would have all but clinched a quarter-final place for the Scottish side.

Second leg still to come
Thursday's only German-German game resulted in a 1-0 win for Bayer Leverkusen over Hamburg with Theofanis Gekas scoring the only goal in the 77th minute.

Both teams are still ranked first in their respective groups, going into the second leg.

After the round of 16 finishes up on March 12-13, the quarterfinals will take place in early April. Manchester hosts the Cup final on May 14.
